Performing Arts Education & Outreach Internship
ShadowLight Productions is seeking an arts education and outreach intern
for the 2015/16 school year.
Status: Internship (Course Credit if applicable)
Reports to: Education/Outreach Director and Managing Director
Schedule: Negotiable/Flexible, but preference given to candidates who can commit 2 days a week (2-3 hours a day) for a full school year or a minimum of 6 months.

ShadowLight Productions is a not-for-profit theatre company with a 40 plus year history dedicated to strengthening our community through the power of Shadow Theatre and cross-cultural storytelling. ShadowLight Productions was founded in 1972 by theatre artist, filmmaker and shadow master, Larry Reed, to nurture indigenous shadow theater traditions and to explore and expand the possibilities of the shadow theatre medium by creating innovative interdisciplinary, multicultural works.
All over the world, Shadow Theatre traditions have played an important part in building community by providing the public with a place to connect with mythology, history, families and neighbors. With our original shadow casting technique as the platform, our teaching methodology focuses on creating a collaborative and democratic process for students. All involved in our art education program have their hands on every aspect of the process, which has proven to be a powerful all-around teaching tool for young minds. Students take part in the long lineage of the Shadow Theatre traditions – this we also consider as part of our mission and legacy.
Description
This internship is an incredible opportunity to earn College Credit, enhance classroom knowledge and work with experienced shadow theatre teaching artists and classroom teachers, while offering a small amount of administrative support to the managing staff. Interns will gain practical skills in the art of shadow theatre, teaching assistant experience, as well as program evaluation, documentation and marketing that translates to other business and non-profit sectors.
Learning Objectives/Goals
The arts education and outreach intern would be responsible for the following;
Art Education:
- Assist ShadowLight teaching artists in the classroom throughout a school residency
- Attend periodic school site meetings, rehearsals and performances
- Coordinate with Education/Outreach Director to record classroom observations and take video/photo documentation during class visits
- Draft education materials and lesson plans as needed
- Collect classroom/school data and student quotes for grant reporting
Administrative/Social Media:
- Design school flyers and digital media content promoting student performances
- Create Facebook and Twitter postings for education department in collaboration with the Education and Managing Directors
- Upload and edit photos and videos for publication
The ideal intern will desire a well-rounded, hands-on experience in arts education and outreach with a passion for theatre, film and other visual media.
The internship requires flexibility, eagerness and desire to work with SF Bay Area youth, and ability to effectively communicate with a variety of artistic and administrative staff members. Must have TB Clearance and method of transportation to and from school sites located in and around the SF Mission District and Oakland. If applicable, Course Credits available in partnership with educational institution.
Preferred Qualifications
· A strong interest in teaching arts education preferred.
· Past experience working with elementary, middle and high school youth
· A passion for performing arts, film and other visual media.
· Experience working effectively in partnership with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
· An enthusiasm for learning and a willingness to take on a variety of tasks.
· Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
· Proficiency with Macintosh computers and using Microsoft Office, Gmail/Google applications, iMovie, Adobe Photoshop and social media a plus!
Priority will be given to those who:
· Are pursuing a career in arts education
· Currently enrolled at a University or College
· Possess the pre-requisite skills (outlined above)
· Can begin early October and commit to 2 days a week (2-3 hours a day) for a full school year or a minimum of 6 months.
